Cloud Storage Deprecation

Cloud Storage V2 (Cloud Saves) Deprecation FAQ

Cloud Storage V2 was shut down on January 31, 2025. Except for (1) Oculus Rift/Go games and (2) Cloud Storage V2 apps that are opted out of the Cloud Backup system, all apps still using Cloud Storage V2 were automatically migrated to Cloud Backup. Any users with data still stored on Cloud Storage V2 were notified to migrate before the deprecation deadline. Review the FAQ below if you have any questions about the deprecation process.
If you’re a developer looking to learn more about the previous Cloud Storage system, see the Cloud Storage page.

Cloud Storage V2? Cloud Saves? Cloud Backup? What do all these terms mean?

  • Cloud Storage V2: the technical name for the Cloud Saves API provided by Meta. This system was deprecated on January 31, 2025.
  • Cloud Saves: refers to save data and the system backed by Cloud Storage V2.
  • Cloud Backup: the new backup system based on Android Auto Backup, replacing Cloud Storage V2.

How did I migrate my data to Cloud Backup?

Before the January 31, 2025 deadline, users with any affected app could launch it at least once to sync a copy of their save on their device. Once synced, Cloud Backup automatically backs up and preserves app data. If the developer of an app opts out of the Cloud Backup system or you are utilizing an Oculus Rift/Go device, your app save data will only be stored on your device.
You can ensure you have up to date backups by navigating to the Cloud Backup panel in the Settings app on your Meta Quest headset under the “System” > “Backup” categories. Here, you can manually create a new backup for your apps.

What happens if I didn’t migrate my data by January 31, 2025?

If you chose to take no action, your Cloud Save data became inaccessible after January 31, 2025 and was eventually deleted. If you have already synced your data, Cloud Backup will automatically backup and preserve your app data. However, if the developer of an app opts out of the Cloud Backup system or you are utilizing an Oculus Rift/Go device, after syncing your app save data will only be stored on your local device and that data will only continue to exist after the deadline so long as your app is installed.

Why did I need to manually migrate my data?

Backups generated by Cloud Backup can only be created on the Meta Quest headset directly. This is because of a variety of technical factors, such as the requirement that backup bundles are end-to-end encrypted, which can only be done on the headset. Additionally, for Oculus Rift/Go devices where Cloud Backup is not supported, users needed to make sure the data was synced locally on their device to preserve it, as it could not be backed up by Cloud Backup.

Why was Cloud Storage V2 deprecated?

Cloud Backup is based off of Android’s Auto Backup system. This system allows the entirety of an app’s data to be bundled up and saved to be restored later whenever the app needs to be reinstalled. Any app built for the Quest platform can utilize Cloud Backup with little to no configuration required. Cloud Storage V2 was a custom solution provided by Meta that required app developers to explicitly design their app to save app data to a specific Cloud Storage directory, which Meta would then upload whenever the app was closed and sync whenever the app was launched. There was limited adoption by developers for Cloud Storage V2 and, due to additional technical limitations, Cloud Storage V2 was deprecated in favor of Cloud Backup.
