Meta Haptics Studio Goes Open Source
If you've tried to build cross-platform haptic experiences, you already know the hurdles: fragmented tooling, platform-specific workflows, and no single design environment that lets you author once and deploy everywhere.
That changes today. Meta Haptics Studio, our free desktop app for designing haptic experiences, is now fully open source. The full design suite (including the SDK which went open source in late 2025, and the Haptics Studio) is now available on GitHub. Fork it. Customize it. Extend it, and contribute to the tool’s evolution.
Why this matters for your projects
The immediate value with this change lies in cross-platform portability. Now you can design a haptic experience once in Haptics Studio and deploy it across Meta Quest, consoles, and through community contributions mobile. From here on out, your haptic design work travels with your project instead of it needing to be platform-specific.
Whether you're a sound designer crafting tactile feedback in FMOD or Wwise, or a developer weaving haptics into a cross-platform game engine, you now have full control over the tool itself, not just the output. If you've been using the Haptics SDK or .haptic file format, this is a natural next step that enables you to customize the design environment that produces those files.
Meta Quest Runtime Optimizer for Unity: Now Built Into Meta Core SDK (With AI-Powered Analysis)
Performance optimization in VR is non-negotiable. In fact, performance matters more in VR than any other medium. Dropped frames don't just look bad; they take people out of the experience and immediately stunt immersion. But hunting down exactly why your app is chugging has historically included a lot of manual profiling, squinting at trace data, and trial-and-error tweaking.
Soon, the Meta Quest Runtime Optimizer
will be integrated directly into
Meta Core SDK v203.
Whether you're building with Unity, Unreal Engine, or another engine that uses Core SDK, you’ll get Bottleneck Analysis and What-if Analysis out of the box.
But the real upgrades come from the AI capabilities built into the tool.
AI-powered analysis
The Runtime Optimizer will include its first AI-powered capabilities, enabling you to connect a local LLM CLI tool (like Claude Code or Gemini CLI) and run one-shot performance analysis that combines your trace data with optimization best practices.
Instead of combing through profiling data trying to figure out why you’re missing performance targets, the tool’s new AI capabilities can read it, identify the bottlenecks, and recommend concrete fixes. Whether you're a solo dev without dedicated performance know-how or a larger team looking to speed up your optimization cycles, this upgrade can cut hours out of the profiling process.

📌 Heads up: The standalone Runtime Optimizer package is being deprecated and will no longer receive updates. Your existing standalone installation will continue to work, but all future improvements, including AI-powered analysis, will only be available through Core SDK. If you upgrade to Core SDK v203, you'll need to remove the standalone Runtime Optimizer package to avoid conflicts. Unity will flag this for you during the upgrade process.
GDC 2026: Watch the Sessions You Missed

There are two sessions in particular we recommend to get started:

To be clear, these sessions aren't "here's what we shipped" recaps. They're practical, strategy-level sessions on building better VR experiences and getting them in front of the right players. If you're thinking about ways to build faster or how to grow your audience and revenue on Quest, this is required viewing.
Let's start with the structural change, because it affects how you plan going forward.
We're standardizing our OS versioning to replace complex build strings with a straightforward numbering system. Now you’ll see releases labeled as OS 201, 202, 203, and so on. Here is how it works: the first digit represents the platform generation, the following digits indicate incremental updates within it, and decimals are used for hot fixes. For example, you will see sequential updates like v201 and v202 for regular refinements, and v201.1 for minor patches, but we will jump to v300 when there is a major milestone update. This system is designed to give you clearer signals about the scope and impact of each update, allowing you to instantly distinguish between major feature leaps and routine patches. Our goal with these changes is to make critical updates predictable, documentation easier to navigate, and your development roadmap less opaque.
What's new in v201
Beyond the naming convention, this release packs some practical updates:
Meta Asset Library now supports Unity LODGroup prefabs. You can download 3D assets directly as LODGroup prefabs, which streamlines the iteration pipeline.
Eye buffer exclusion from screen recordings. For privacy-sensitive apps, you can now exclude eye buffers from recordings, a useful capability for developers working in enterprise, health, or education spaces.
Bug fixes and stability improvements across the Immersive Debugger, AI Building Blocks, and Interaction SDK.
Browse and download 3D assets as Unity LODGroup prefabs directly from the Meta Asset Library.
Deprecation notices to be aware of
OVRHaptics is being deprecated in favor of newer haptic APIs. (See the Haptics Studio section above; the ecosystem is moving toward open, cross-platform solutions.)
The Virtual Keyboard is being deprecated; we recommend transitioning your projects to the System Keyboard Overlay as a more robust and actively maintained input experience.
Check whether your project uses OVRHaptics or the Virtual Keyboard and begin planning your migration path.
