Meta Haptics Studio and Haptics SDK
We’re excited to announce that Haptics Studio and Haptics SDK, two tools that were previously in experimental release, will now be more widely available—with new and improved features—as part of Meta Quest v60 updates. Haptics SDK, which was
previously announced for Unity, is also compatible with
Unreal as part of this public release.
These tools make it easy for you to design, test, and integrate haptic experiences into virtual and mixed reality apps. Adding haptics enables more immersive experiences by engaging a user’s sense of touch, with natural interactions such as realistic clicks, lifelike textures, and nuanced notifications.
Design and Integrate Haptics Faster
Quest 3 controllers come with TruTouch haptics, enabling a new level of immersion and expanding your creative possibilities.
Haptics Studio, a desktop app (
Windows |
Mac) and companion VR app, allows developers and sound designers to unlock these new capabilities. You can now quickly create, audition and integrate high quality haptics for Meta Quest controllers. Get started fast: design your haptics from existing audio effects or build them from scratch. Instantly experience your haptic creations using the VR companion app, and then export your effects and integrate them using Haptics SDK (
Unity |
Unreal).
The Haptics SDK (
Unity |
Unreal) offers a media-like API to trigger and control haptics in the same way you’d control audio, enabling you to seamlessly integrate your haptics into your app. The SDK’s runtime detection system will optimize the haptic signal for the currently connected controller, ensuring your haptic clips are both backward- and forward-compatible across Meta Quest devices.
No matter what level of experience you have in integrating haptics, the Haptics SDK will help you quickly create a sense of immersion and presence in your experiences.
Updates Since the Experimental Release
Since the public experimental release, announced in March 2023, we have worked to make several updates and improvements to Haptics Studio and Haptics SDK:
- A new learning section, which you can explore directly from the Homescreen, featuring a variety of resources—such as video tutorials, haptic guidelines, and in-app tutorials—to help enhance your haptic design skills.
- A redesigned auditioning app is now available on the Meta Store (App Lab) allowing for quick access from your Apps, no developer mode required. We have introduced pinning projects to locally store your favorite projects on device.
- Improved user experience and design workflow:
- Focused learning experience in our updated in-app tutorials, making it easier to focus on our curated content, including product features, design tips, and more.
- Better flow in editing for our latest update of the editor, so it’s more intuitive for you to switch between creative analysis and breakpoint editing.
- Enhance your haptic design skills with our Haptic Design Guidelines, providing you with guidance, best practices and structured processes that can help you design delightful haptic experiences.
We’re continually updating our tools to make developing for Meta Quest a more flexible, streamlined, and enjoyable experience, and we hope you’ll enjoy these latest upgrades.
