In April, we launched our
Hand Tracking API v2.0, the next generation of
Presence Platform’s powerful hand tracking capabilities. This release marked a variety of improvements that can help you integrate increasingly immersive and natural hand interactions into your apps, including step-change improvements in tracking continuity, gesture support, object manipulation, and much more. Together, these capabilities provide a deepened sense of presence in VR.
Today, we’re announcing a variety of changes to our Hand Tracking API over the coming months—expanded support for v2.0 on the original Meta Quest, apps defaulting to v2.0, and the upcoming deprecation of v1.0 in April 2023. These updates don’t require you to take any immediate action, but we wanted to give you advanced notice. Dive into the details below.
Expanded Support for Hand Tracking API v2.0 on Meta Quest Devices
Hand Tracking API v2.0 is available today on Meta Quest 2 devices. To help you use the latest API capabilities with a wider audience, support for API v2.0 will be expanded to original Meta Quest devices beginning in October 2022. We’re excited to bring these improvements to more people and improve the quality of hand tracking experienced by audiences across the platform.
Apps Defaulting to v2.0 in December 2022
Today, you need to
select v2.0 in your app’s Android Manifest file to take advantage of the updated API. Starting in December 2022, all apps that don’t specify a hand tracking version will default to v2.0.
While adjusting the default version of the Hand Tracking API from v1.0 to v2.0 should lead to an overall improvement in hand tracking quality across apps, you may temporarily opt out by
updating your app’s Android Manifest file to v1.0.
Deprecating Hand Tracking API v1.0 in April 2023
Starting in April 2023, Hand Tracking API v1.0 will no longer be supported, and all apps that have integrated our Hand Tracking API will automatically start using v2.0. Regardless of what API version is selected in your app’s Manifest file, it will be updated to leverage v2.0 functionality. This includes apps that don’t have a version of the API selected in their Manifest file.
