Project Setup

Updated: Oct 19, 2026

Create a new Unity project

Create and configure your Unity project for Meta VR hand-tracking development. This workflow uses Meta Quest Developer Hub (MQDH) to create the project. To configure a project without MQDH, follow Manual Steps for Project Setup.

  1. Open Meta Quest Developer Hub (MQDH) on your computer.
  2. In the left sidebar, select XR Projects. MQDH shows your XR projects and a Create project button in the top-right corner.
MQDH XR Projects page with XR Projects selected in the sidebar and the Create project button highlighted.
  3. If MQDH cannot find Unity installed in the default location, follow the instructions in MQDH to download and install it.
  1. Select Create project in the top-right corner. The Create Unity XR project dialog opens.
Create Unity XR project dialog in MQDH with empty Name and Location fields.
  2. In Name, enter a name for the project. Names can be up to 100 characters.
Name field in the Create Unity XR project dialog with a project name entered.
  3. In Version, select the Unity Editor version to use for the project.
Version dropdown in the Create Unity XR project dialog listing installed Unity Editor versions.
  4. In Location, choose the folder on your computer where you want to save the project.
Location field in the Create Unity XR project dialog with a project folder selected.
  1. In the Configuration section, set XR Plugin to OpenXR.
XR Plugin dropdown in the Configuration section set to OpenXR.
  2. Set SDKs to All. This option installs all Meta XR packages in the Meta XR All-in-One SDK.
SDKs dropdown in the Configuration section set to All.
  3. Select Create at the bottom of the dialog. MQDH shows a loading status, such as Processing · 15%.

  4. Wait for project generation to finish. The project opens in Unity Editor automatically.
OculusXR plugin deprecation notice
The OculusXR plugin is deprecated and no longer receives updates or support for the latest Meta VR features.

  1. If the scene contains a Main Camera, right-click it in the Hierarchy window and select Delete.
Hierarchy window context menu for Main Camera with Delete highlighted.
Interaction SDK uses its own camera rig. Interaction Setup adds an OVRCameraRig, which handles the camera system and head-movement tracking, so the scene does not need the default Main Camera.
Select Window > Meta > Tools > Project Setup Tool.
Project Setup Tool selected in the Project Settings window.
The tool runs configuration checks against your project settings. Each finding appears with an error, warning, or info icon. A long list of errors and warnings is normal the first time you open the tool in a new project. The tool checks every configuration rule registered by your installed Meta XR packages, including rules that require setup after project creation. The list doesn’t mean project creation failed. The steps below clear the required findings.
Findings are grouped into categories:
  • Outstanding Issues: required items that still need action.
  • Recommended Items: recommended and optional items.
  • Manually Fixable Items: items that need manual setup. Apply these changes yourself.
Review the findings in each category first. Under Outstanding Issues, select Fix All to apply the required fixes for the current platform in one step. Under Recommended Items, review each recommendation on its own and apply the ones you want. Select Apply All only when you want every recommendation in that category. Items under Manually Fixable Items aren’t covered by either bulk action, so apply those changes yourself. Repeat the review and the fixes in both the Standalone and Android tabs.
Apply all fixes in the Project Setup Tool.
On Windows, if prompted to switch the Graphics API to Direct3D11, select Yes, Switch and Restart. The Unity Editor restarts with the new setting.
Select Edit > Project Settings > XR Plug-in Management > OpenXR. In OpenXR Feature Groups, enable Meta XR for both Standalone and Android.
OpenXR settings for the Standalone and Android tabs, each with the Meta XR feature group enabled.
Open Window > Package Management > Package Manager, select Updates, and review any available Meta XR package updates.
Package Manager Updates tab showing available Meta XR package updates.

Confirm project setup

Confirm the following required settings before you continue:
  • The Project Setup Tool shows no remaining required issues in the Standalone and Android tabs.
  • Under Edit > Project Settings > XR Plug-in Management > OpenXR, the Meta XR feature group is enabled for Standalone and Android.
After both checks pass, the required project setup is complete. If you set SDKs to All when you created the project, also confirm the URP setup in Use the Universal Render Pipeline. The Platform SDK and AI tooling setup is optional, depending on your project’s needs.

Optional setup

Use the Universal Render Pipeline

Required if you installed all SDKs
The required OpenXR project setup above may not include this step. Complete it if you set SDKs to All when you created the project, if your project uses the Universal Render Pipeline (URP), or if you want to switch to URP.
To check which render pipeline your project uses, select Edit > Project Settings > Graphics and inspect Default Render Pipeline. If the field shows an asset labeled (Universal Render Pipeline Asset), URP is the default render pipeline.
Project Settings window with Graphics selected and Default Render Pipeline set to a Universal Render Pipeline Asset.
If no asset is assigned to Default Render Pipeline and you want to use URP, do the following:
  1. Select Assets > Create > Rendering > URP Asset (with Universal Renderer) to create a URP asset.
  2. In Edit > Project Settings > Graphics, assign the new asset to Default Render Pipeline.
  3. In Edit > Project Settings > Quality, make sure each quality level you use either has no Render Pipeline Asset assigned, so it uses the default, or has the same URP asset assigned.
After you assign the URP asset, open the Project Setup Tool again and resolve any issues it lists. When the URP package is installed, the tool also checks URP settings.

Add Platform SDK and App ID

If your app uses Platform SDK features such as user identity, entitlements, in-app purchases, achievements, or group presence, add the Meta XR Platform SDK from the Asset Store. After installing it, create an app on the Meta Horizon Developer Dashboard and copy the App ID from the API page. See Set up a platform app for Unity development and Platform Solutions overview.

Enabling your project for AI

Install the meta-vr plugin from the Meta Quest Agentic Tools repository and marketplace by following the installation instructions for your supported AI coding agent. The plugin bundles Meta VR CLI MCP configuration and skills. If you run Meta VR CLI through npm (npx -y metavr), Node.js 16 or later is required.
Follow Unity’s Unity Pipeline package and CLI documentation, then add the com.unity.pipeline package to the project:
unity pipeline install
Confirm that the Pipeline server is available:
unity pipeline list
Continue when Running and Server Reachable are both true. See the Meta VR CLI overview to use Meta VR CLI from a terminal or through an AI coding agent.
For more information about configuring Unity projects manually, see Project Configuration Overview.
