Design Considerations

Before you start building your app, you should consider the overall design to improve user comfort and usability:
  • Add subtle sound and audio feedback across your experience: Nothing brings an experience more to life than sound. You should therefore constantly look for opportunities to incorporate audio feedback into your experience. Since there is no tactile feedback in Mixed Reality, providing visual and audio cue becomes even more important to improve interaction confidence and usability. E.g. in our sample projects you will notice that each UI element is emitting a sound whenever it is pressed or grabbed. The same goes for objects such as grabbables.
  • Take Scene Understanding into account: HRTFs provide strong directional cues, but without room effects, they often sound dry and lifeless. Some environmental cues (for example, early reflections and late reverberation) are also important in providing strong cues about the distance to a sound source.

Key Elements / Building Blocks

  • Make your content accessible: Design your app to be perceivable by everyone, regardless of their sensory abilities. This means providing alternatives for visual, auditory, and tactile content, so users can interact with your app in a way that suits them best.
  • Camera rig: This building block provides everything required to enable head tracking and stereo rendering, as well as most mixed reality capabilities in Unity. It will be installed as a required dependency for most other Building Blocks.
