Jabu Jabu is many things. It’s a puzzler that's easy to learn yet difficult to master. It’s aquatically adorable, with a name that’s impossible to say without smiling. And it scratches an itch that keeps players coming back round after round.
So how did Albyon—a team known for cinematic, story-rich VR experiences like Mobile Suit Gundam: Silver Phantom and Wallace & Gromit: The Grand Getaway—end up creating this playful, quick-session mobile puzzler?
The answer lies in Worlds, the dynamic, creative playground that enabled Albyon to explore light and accessible gameplay. The result is Jabu Jabu, a habitually fun mobile debut that still carries the developer’s signature polish.

A splash of inspiration

The game’s journey began with its core gameplay of merging items in a satisfying and intuitive loop. As the team explored names to match the experience, they discovered “Jabu Jabu,” the Japanese onomatopoeia for “splish splash.” This sparked the game’s creative direction of colorful ocean critters and bubbly animations, all designed to make players smile from their first tap.

Diving into mobile

Transitioning from cinematic VR to mobile gaming required Albyon to rethink their usual approach. They set a specific goal to create something instantly enjoyable and visually compelling with interactions that felt natural on smaller screens. They also aimed for universal appeal with enough depth for quick yet engaging sessions.

Development strategy

Albyon approached mobile development with a core principle of delivering immediate fun, leading them to:
  • Optimize visuals for a vibrant, attention-grabbing underwater environment.
  • Use familiar mobile gaming UI patterns for accessibility.
  • Emphasize feedback loops to sustain engagement.
  • Craft intuitive controls for quick, enjoyable sessions.

Achieving replayability through balanced design

For Jabu Jabu, Albyon knew that getting players to return meant focusing on a truly balanced and engaging design. The team leveraged Worlds’ creation tools to bring their vision to life:
  • Gameplay and session length: Short, rewarding sessions featuring eye-popping visuals, playful physics and scoring bonuses that reward mastery.
  • Fresh experiences: Five distinct game modes (Classic, Challenge, Time Limit, Speedrun and Endless) that entice players with new challenges.
  • Player-friendly monetization: Optional XP boosts for fun extras that don’t offer unfair advantages.
  • Long-term appeal: Progression systems with unlockable cosmetics and leaderboards that offer rewarding experiences for different types of players.
  • Watchability & sharing: Visually satisfying mechanics and chain reactions that make gameplay inherently fun to watch and share as short-form videos on social media.
The final piece of the puzzle? Albyon partnered with active content creators within Worlds to quickly build a community around Jabu Jabu. Ultimately, the team aims to reach an even bigger audience by partnering with mobile gaming influencers and launching social media ads targeted at casual mobile gamers.
"From the start, we designed Jabu Jabu with all of this in mind: gameplay that's easy to jump into, fun to replay and engaging to watch because of the satisfying aspect."

Key learnings

Looking back at Albyon's development journey, here are the key lessons they learned about creating a successful mobile game:
  • Build for replayability: Create short, addictive loops that players feel compelled to repeat and master.
  • Prioritize a frictionless user experience: Enable players to quickly jump into gameplay with intuitive controls, ideally in a single tap.
  • Consider different audiences: Create progression and engagement systems with broad appeal that cater to various types of players.
  • Develop with shareability in mind: Use visually appealing and satisfying interactions that encourage players to share their wins on social media.
  • Community matters: Partner early with influencers to build engaged communities that support ongoing growth.

Why this matters

Albyon sees Worlds as a creative platform full of potential, especially as it expands to mobile and reaches new audiences. To tap into this, the team is already planning fresh features like a multiplayer mode to spark friendly competition and social interaction.
With Jabu Jabu, the team offers a powerful illustration of how a mobile-first vision, centered on compelling and persistent replayability, can deliver a polished experience that not only meets its core design goals, but also captivates a broad new player base.
How does the team think players will respond to Jabu Jabu in the long run? As they put it, “Over time, we want Jabu Jabu to be that game you reach for whenever you've got a minute: Simple to jump into, surprisingly addictive and always fun to come back to.”
