Update September 28, 2022: Previously, apps were assigned new categories and genres based on this new categorization. Starting today, you can now select the category and genres for your apps in the App Metadata section of your app submission. The new categories and genres are visible to all people across web, mobile, and VR. For more information, please read our documentation.

To better help the Oculus community discover VR apps and games, today we are rolling out some changes to how titles are categorized in the Oculus Quest Store. These changes are designed to improve the browsing and discovery experience, as well as enable better recommendations based on apps users already own.
As the breadth of applications and games in the Oculus Quest Store has grown, developers and users have noted the limitations of the existing categories. The result was inconsistent categorization which made it difficult for users to find relevant content, and confusing for developers looking to classify their app.
Under the new taxonomy, applications will first be classified under a top level category, Games, Apps, or Entertainment, and then tagged with relevant genres specific to that category. With these changes, we are also rolling out a new browsing experience in the Oculus Store with:
  • New Top Level Navigation - Users can quickly navigate between Games, Apps, and Entertainment content, making it easier to find relevant titles. Each category will have its own Features, Top Charts, New Releases, and themed shelves.
  • Improved Filtering - A new filtering panel allows users to narrow down their search by genre, as well as sort apps by price, title, and featured status.
  • Reduced Cross-tagging and Cluttered Shelves - It’s easier to see and search for a wider range of apps, as the new tagging system prevents the same application from appearing frequently in irrelevant searches.
While we are rolling out these changes, some users will see the new categorization and other users will continue to see the old categorization. If your app has already been published to the Oculus Quest Store, you do not need to take any additional action, as all existing content has already been reclassified under the new taxonomy. This does not impact App Lab apps. You can view your title’s category and genres under App Product Detail Page section for your app in the Oculus Developer Center.
We are excited by this update that will help users discover and purchase relevant apps and games on the Oculus Store.
