Version 1.13.0 Release Notes

The Oculus Avatar SDK assists developers with implementing social presence and hand presence for Gear VR and for Oculus Rift and Touch controllers.

With the Avatar SDK, it is easy to bring the avatar appearance users create in Oculus Home into your own applications and make them viewable by other users. Avatars also include hand presence for Touch, letting you integrate Touch interaction into your app.

Includes Unity and C/C++ examples for Rift and Gear VR.

New Features

  • Added avatar support for Gear VR.
  • Gear VR avatar art assets are embedded within Gear VR Oculus Home.
  • Gear VR avatar meshes have 1/4 the tri-count of Rift avatar meshes.
  • Gear VR avatar materials are simplified using ASTC textures.
  • There is a default assumed head height of 170cm.
  • Unity Gear VR and Rift are combined in a single Unity package. There is a separate Avatar plugin app ID field for Gear VR to facilitate building separate Rift and Gear VR targets from the same project.
  • The Native Gear VR sample code is in the Sample/MirrorAndroid directory. Some assembly using the Mobile SDK's VrTemplate script is required.
  • Avatars now use less CPU. We reduced the required garbage collection from 140kb to 5kb per frame.
  • Reduce drawcalls per eye from 11 to 3 using the Unity Combined Meshes option.
  • API Changes

  • No breaking changes.
  • Bug Fixes

  • Fixed an issue from SDK 1.12 that could crash apps.
  • Enabling single pass stereo mode in Unity no longer makes materials flicker.
  • Touch thumbstick and trigger animations were broken but have been restored.
  • The Mirror sample no longer has incorrect MIP levels.
  • Fixed an issue that could sometimes crash Unity apps when calling scene.destroy() or destroy(gameObject) on avatars.
  • Fixed an issue from the 1.13 beta where selecting combined meshes could result in invisible eyewear and accessories.
  • Known Issues

  • The Android.mk file for Native Gear VR development should be in OVRAvatarSDK/Android/jni but is instead in OVRAvatarSDK/Android/jni/jni. As a workaround, move this file to the correct location.
