Please note: This blog post has been updated as of January 11, 2024. The age group self-certification requirements for Store apps will now launch in mid- to late-January and in March for App Lab apps.
Early next year, we’re introducing two platform requirements for all developers. The first you’ve probably already heard about—User Age Group Self-Certification, which aims to ensure we’re creating and maintaining safe experiences for children ages 10-12 on our platform. What you might not know is that we’re also adding a short questionnaire to the Data Use Checkup (DUC) in January that evaluates your app’s data handling practices.
A smooth path towards app compliance starts with a clear understanding of what actions you need to take. That’s why we’ve created two new eLearning courses with Data Protocol that give you clarity on these new requirements and policies in just a few minutes.
Whether you’ve completed several DUCs or are just starting to consider your apps’ intended age group, you can check out these courses to find essential steps, tips, and recommendations from subject matter experts at Meta. Take a proactive approach towards app compliance and start each course by using the links below.

Completing Age Group Self-Certification

Our Age Group Self-Certification Policy requires you to self-certify your app’s intended age group beginning January 2024 for apps on the Meta Quest Store and March 2024 for apps on App Lab. The course Completing Age Group Self-Certification covers the actions you’ll need to take, including key considerations for choosing the right age group for your app:
  • Teens and Adults (13+): For apps intended primarily for people 13 years old or older.
  • Mixed Ages (Under 13 and 13+): For apps intended for both children under 13 years old (ages 10 – 12) and teens and adults (13+).
  • Children (Under 13): For apps intended primarily for children under 13.
The age group you select for your app can have an impact on your marketing efforts, the data you collect, and many other factors. To ensure you make informed decisions and meet upcoming deadlines to avoid enforcement action, get a head start by completing the course here.

Navigating the Data Handling Questionnaire

Distributing immersive experiences on Meta Quest comes with a responsibility to protect your app’s audience and their user data. To help ensure you and your partners are properly handling that data, we’ll be adding six data handling questions to the DUC questionnaire starting January 26, 2024.
The course Navigating the Data Handling Questionnaire breaks down the new questions and what information you’ll have to prepare to properly answer them, such as details about your data controller and data processors.
This course also provides recommended steps you can take if you’re unsure about how to respond or how to implement required data policies.
Protecting user data is a top priority for us and our platform, and you can make sure you’re creating a safe foundation for handling data moving forward by completing the new course here.
