Selfie camera
Updated: Apr 6, 2026
The Avatar Selfie camera lets users take photos of their Meta Avatar within your app. Users see a virtual camera viewfinder showing their avatar posed in the current environment, and can capture and share images. This feature drives social engagement — avatar selfies are a popular way for users to share their VR experiences on social media.
The selfie camera renders the user’s Meta Avatar from a front-facing perspective while the user sees a live preview in a virtual viewfinder. The captured image includes the avatar, the virtual environment, and any mixed reality elements if passthrough is active. Users can then share the image through the system share sheet.
- Avatar rendering — Full Meta Avatar with current customizations and expressions
- Environment capture — The virtual scene or mixed reality passthrough is included as the background
- Facial expressions — Avatar mirrors the user’s facial expressions via face tracking (on supported devices)
- Pose control — Users can position and pose their avatar before capturing
- Share integration — Captured images are available through the system share sheet for social media sharing
When to use the selfie camera
The selfie camera works well in apps where users want to document and share their experience:
- Social apps — Group photos with friends’ avatars
- Games — Victory screenshots, boss fight captures, custom character showcases
- Creative apps — Showing off creations with the creator’s avatar
- Events — Virtual event photo opportunities
