Gear VR Uploads with CLI

We’re happy to announce the addition of Gear VR uploads to the Oculus Platform Command Line Utility (CLI). The CLI allows for smaller, faster uploads and can be integrated directly into your build system.
When uploading an Android APK on the Oculus Developer Dashboard, the entire file must be uploaded every time. With the CLI, only the bytes that differ from your previous APK will be uploaded. This can greatly reduce the amount of data that must be uploaded, leading to faster uploads.
CLI uploads for Rift have been available for several months, and developers have been making great use of them. Several developers have integrated the utility into their continuous integration pipelines, so they never have to upload a build by hand. The median upload size for the CLI is just 10% of the full build size, and the median upload time is just 33 seconds.
Here's how you upload an APK using the CLI:
  1. Download the CLI from the Tools page

  2. Grab the App ID and App Secret from the API tab in the Dashboard

  3. Run the upload-gear-build command to upload an APK to your Alpha release channel:
  4. ovr-platform-util.exe upload-gear-build --app_id [ID] --app_secret [SECRET] --apk C:\BestAppEver.apk --channel alpha --notes "Just testing out the CLI"
You can learn more about the command line utility by visiting the Tools page.
We'd love to hear your feedback on how we can make this tool even better. Send us a note by submitting a feature request in the Dashboard by using the “Give Feedback” button.
