Introducing Oculus Rift S — A New PC VR Headset Coming Spring 2019

Today at GDC, we officially announced Oculus Rift S — our newest PC VR headset. It combines the convenience of built-in Oculus Insight tracking technology with the full power of a PC. Built on the Rift Platform, Rift S continues to deliver the most immersive content that VR has to offer, and it’s launching in Spring 2019 for $399 USD.

Commitment to the Rift Platform

We’re committed to the Rift platform and the 6DOF ecosystem of VR gaming. The same SDKs and Rift documentation you’ve been using to develop for Rift continue to work with Rift S.
Rift S supports the same content library as Rift. Because Rift and Rift S share the same core platform experience, current Rift owners will be able to take advantage of our continued software updates. They’ll also enjoy access to the same games available today and coming in the future.

Oculus Insight for Precise Roomscale Tracking

Like Quest, Rift S includes Oculus Insight, our state-of-the-art inside-out tracking technology. On Rift S, this innovative system features five sensors to maximize tracking volume and support of the existing Rift library. Oculus Insight enables a greater sense of immersion, presence and mobility. Oculus Touch controllers, redesigned for inside-out-tracking, bring familiar hand presence and inputs into VR.
Oculus Insight sensors also let us enable a true stereo-correct passthrough feature, Passthrough+, so Rift S owners can get a glimpse of what’s happening around them without ever taking off the headset. It’s especially helpful any time someone needs to step or see outside of their play space. Passthrough+ utilizes core Oculus runtime advancements, including ASW, to produce a comfortable experience with minimal depth disparity or performance impact.

Under the Hood

Improved optics and display technology deliver a sharper picture, with higher pixel density for an even more immersive gaming experience. Games on Rift have never looked better.
We partnered with Lenovo™ to design Rift S, drawing on their experience in the VR and AR space. Rift S introduces a new halo headband design for increased comfort, weight distribution and a simple, single-cable system for a clutter-free experience. Rift S features the same integrated audio system as Oculus Quest and Oculus Go, with a headphone jack that lets people use their own favorite headphones.
We can’t wait to share what's next!
