How are visitors and retention rates calculated?
We measure retention rates daily for each world. To view your retention bonus for a specific day, choose a single date in the date picker (we’ll call this DATE). In the bonus analytics table, you’ll see columns for the three levels of Retention bonus-eligible days. If your world meets the retention threshold, you’ll also see a “1” in the column for the level of retention bonus awarded for DATE.
How are visitors and retention rates calculated?
In order to calculate your visitors and retention rate for a specific DATE, we actually look at data over a 2 week time-period.
First, we measure visitors that entered your world between 7 to 13 days before DATE. Any user that visits during this range is counted towards the weekly visitor amount for DATE. For example: if you select April 14, weekly visitors will show the amount of visitors to your world between April 1 - April 7.
For each of those visitors, we then look to see if they returned to the world between 1 to 7 days following their visit. So, if a visitor came in on April 1, we would look to see if they returned between April 2 - April 8. If a visitor came in for the first time on April 2, we would look to see if they returned between April 3 - April 9. This continues all the way through with visitors that came on April 7, and looking to see if they returned between April 8 - April 14.
We add up the total number of visitors that returned to get the amount of retained weekly visitors for DATE. The retention rate for DATE is calculated by taking the amount of retained weekly visitors for DATE divided by total weekly visitors for DATE.
- Visitors must return on a different day to count as returning visitors.
- There is no minimum amount of time visitors must spend in your world in order to count for this calculation.
- Visitors do not need to be “new” visitors in order to count toward this bonus. All returning visitors count toward retention.
In this example, we will use hypothetical values to calculate the retention rate for “August 18”:
- Measure the number of visitors that visited between August 4 and August 11 (7-13 days before August 18). Let’s say that there were 200 visitors between those dates, so our “weekly visitors” for August 18 is 200.
- For each of those visitors, measure whether they returned between 1-7 days following their visit. This date range varies by individual based on what day of the week they visited. Let’s say that 45 weekly visitors returned within a week of their visit, meaning we have 45 “weekly retained visitors”.
- The retention rate for August 18 is calculated by taking the amount of weekly retained visitors (45) and dividing by the total weekly visitors (200): 45/200 = 0.225, or 22.5%.
