Cloud Storage Deprecation
Cloud Storage V2 (Cloud Saves) Deprecation FAQ
Cloud Storage V2 is being shut down on January 31st, 2025. Except for (1) Oculus Rift/Go games and (2) Cloud Storage V2 apps that are opted out of the Cloud Backup system, all apps still using Cloud Storage V2 will be automatically migrated to Cloud Backup. Any users with data still stored on Cloud Storage V2 will be notified to migrate before the deprecation deadline. Please take the time to review the FAQ below if you have any questions about the deprecation process.
If you’re a developer looking to learn more about the old Cloud Storage system, please check out the old Cloud Storage
page for more information.
Cloud Storage V2? Cloud Saves? Cloud Backup? What do all these terms mean? - Cloud Storage V2: the technical name for the Cloud Saves API provided by Meta. This system is being deprecated on January 31st, 2025.
- Cloud Saves: refers to save data and the system backed by Cloud Storage V2.
- Cloud Backup: the new backup system based on Android Auto Backup, replacing Cloud Storage V2.
How do I migrate my data to Cloud Backup? If you currently have any affected app, launch it at least once to sync a copy of your save on your device. Once synced, Cloud Backup will automatically backup and preserve your app data. If the developer of an app opts out of the Cloud Backup system or you are utilizing an Oculus Rift/Go device, your app save data will only be stored on your device.
You can ensure you have up to date backups by navigating to the Cloud Backup panel in the Settings app on your Meta Quest headset under the “System” > “Backup” categories. Here, you can manually create a new backup for your apps.
What happens if I don’t migrate my data by January 31st, 2025? If you choose to take no action, your Cloud Save data will become inaccessible after January 31st, 2025 and will eventually be deleted. If you have already synced your data, Cloud Backup will automatically backup and preserve your app data. However, if the developer of an app opts out of the Cloud Backup system or you are utilizing an Oculus Rift/Go device, after syncing your app save data will only be stored on your local device and that data will only continue to exist after the deadline so long as your app is installed.
Why do I need to manually migrate my data? Backups generated by Cloud Backup can only be created on the Meta Quest headset directly. This is because of a variety of technical factors, such as the requirement that we end-to-end encrypt the backup bundles which can only be done on the headset. Additionally, for Oculus Rift/Go devices where Cloud Backup is not supported, users will need to make sure the data is synced locally on their device to preserve it as it cannot be backed up by Cloud Backup.
Why is Cloud Storage V2 being deprecated? Cloud Backup is based off of Android’s Auto Backup system. This system allows the entirety of an app’s data to be bundled up and saved to be restored later whenever the app needs to be reinstalled. Any app built for the Quest platform can utilize Cloud Backup with little to no configuration required. Cloud Storage V2 was a custom solution provided by Meta that required app developers to explicitly design their app to save app data to a specific Cloud Storage directory, which Meta would then upload whenever the app was closed and sync whenever the app was launched. There was limited adoption by developers for Cloud Storage V2 and due to some other technical issues, we decided to deprecate Cloud Storage V2 in favor of Cloud Backup.
