Today we're excited to announce that the Meta XR Audio SDK Plug-in is now live in Wwise! This powerful plug-in delivers the core audio features required to create immersive experiences in mixed reality for Meta Quest headsets and other devices.
With the Meta XR Audio SDK, you have access to the foundational components of spatial audio and acoustics simulation, enabling your apps to provide an immersive experience that makes users feel present and connected to virtual objects and characters. Our Audio SDK has been extensively tested and proven to be performant and stable, as evidenced by its broad use in hundreds of apps available on the Meta Horizon Store today.
Elevate Your Mixed Reality Experiences with Immersive Audio
What really sets the Meta XR Audio SDK apart from other capabilities is the quality of our spatial audio. After years of research and testing, we've developed a proprietary HRTF (Head-Related Transfer Function) model that provides superior localization and spectral transparency compared to models based on publicly available data sets. This means that your users will be able to pinpoint sound sources in 3D space with precision, creating a more immersive experience than standard "3D audio" rendering capabilities built into game engines.
The Meta XR Audio SDK also works with some of the more advanced features offered by Meta in our Unity and Unreal Engine SDKs, including the recently launched Acoustic Ray Tracing functionality that debuted in Batman: Arkham Shadow, winner of The Game Awards 2024 VR Game of the Year. When combined, these capabilities give you all the tools needed to create an immersive experience that makes users feel truly embodied in virtual spaces and present with virtual objects and characters.
So, what can you expect from the Meta XR Audio SDK? Here are just a few of the key features:
Immersive sound localization: Our HRTF renders audio spatially, allowing users to precisely locate sound sources in 3D space, including direction, distance and elevation.
Enveloping environmental audio: Supports ambisonics file rendering for creating immersive 3D soundscapes that envelop the user and draw them into the virtual world.
Authentic environmental presence: Applies a basic room acoustics model to spatialized sounds, creating reflections and reverberations characteristic of the environment and makes the user feel like they're really there. The plug-in also works with Meta’s Acoustic Ray Tracing solution, which includes more advanced features such as occlusion, diffraction and obstruction simulation based on the 3D geometry of the environment.
Performant and stable on mobile mixed reality headsets: Proven performance in hundreds of successful apps available in the Meta Horizon Store, including Batman: Arkham Shadow.
